1 Thought From Me

While confession of sin has been a part of many historic Christian liturgies, it is not a regular part of many of evangelical services.

There are a variety of reasons for this, including the fact that confession is a “downer” if the goal is to produce a rousing, emotionally positive experience.

But what could be more rousing than confessing your sin and then remembering that they are all forgiven through the blood of Jesus?

2 Quotes

I.
“Human sin is fundamentally a refusal to glorify God, a rejection of our created vocation to worship Him.” Noel Due

II.
“While guilt disturbs and breaks my peace, Nor flesh nor soul hath rest or ease; Lord, let me hear thy pardoning voice, And make my broken heart rejoice.” Isaac Watts, from Psalm 51

3 Passages of Confession & Forgiveness

I.
Psalm 32:5 “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”

II.
Psalm 51:3, 7 “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me… purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

III.
1 John 1:8-9 “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8-9

For Reflection:

If your church does not regularly confess their sins in your church service, what would it look like to turn up the dial of confession slightly over the next 6 months?
