1 Thought from Me

While the word “thanks” does not require an object in the English language, theologically it is like a transitive verb—it requires an object to complete its meaning. Just as you cannot simply "give" without passing something along to another person, you cannot truly give thanks without directing that thanks to someone. To attempt thanksgiving without addressing the source is like speaking in an empty room.

Some people “practice gratitude” each a for its mental benefits. But true thanksgiving—expressions of gratitude to the giver—rightly honor the giver, with mental/spiritual health as a secondary benefit.

Those separated from God are marked by a lack of thanks to the One who made and sustains them (Rom. 1:21). But in Christ, we can give thanks always and for everything, especially our redemption, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:20).

2 Quotes on Giving Thanks

I.
”Thanksgiving is not a natural virtue; it is a fruit of the Spirit, given by Him.” Jerry Bridges (Source)

II.
“The giving of thanks is the mark of the new covenant community that sets it apart from the world: ‘Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving’ (Eph. 5:4). The new covenant community is the community that gives thanks to God, not just for all he has done in the redeeming work of Calvary, but for all that he gives in every sphere of life.” Noel Due (Source)

3 Passages to Encourage Giving Thanks

I.
Psalm 40:9-10 is a great passage to introduce testimonies or prayers of thanksgiving by congregation members. “I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold I have not restrained my lips… I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.”

II.
Psalm 107: “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble” (1-2).

III.
Psalm 136: “For his love endures forever…”

May the Lord bless your Thanksgiving preparations!
